NewsNEC Classic Car Show November 2010
06/12/2010
Well looking at the numbers attending the Classic Car Show on the weekend of 12 – 14 November, it was truly a great success. 5 of the NEC halls were filled with people, classic cars, products old and new, and some very strong representation from all of the classic car clubs. There were over 200 clubs and in excess of a 1000 classic cars on display, over the 3 days there were more than 40,000 visitors.
During our chats around the place it was is interesting, to learn that whilst new car sales remain static, the auction houses are thronged with well healed individuals who are prepared to pay staggering amounts of money for the truly classic car. This makes them far too expensive for the mere mortal car enthusiasts, who in turn direct their attention to cars which were once common road cars; these have now started to carve their own place in motoring history. The Capri the Escorts, however, even within these marques’ there are a few models that attract attention, the RS the MK1 Capri each attracting exceptional prices. The Austin Healey 3000 and The Sprite has always attracted interest and the resale prices continue to grow, especially for the really well restored ones. This of course is good news for ourselves, we see increasing numbers of individuals who take on restoration themselves and demand high quality spares at competitive prices. In support of this growth we continue to improve our stock holding and to seek out those UK manufacturers who are prepared to make good quality product at the most competitive prices for the home restorer and the restoration company alike. There was a lot going on around the show, what was really interesting was a “Restoration Theatre” which was very educational and informative, especially for the serious restorer. Items being made using the English Wheel, Shrinkers and Stretchers, plus of course the equally traditional “hit it with a hammer” approach to shaping metal on a sandbag.Certainly one of the highlights was meeting Sir Sterling Moss, it also gave us an opportunity to meet old friends and some of our regular suppliers, for anyone interested in classic cars it is a great show and we look forward to seeing you there next year when you can meet us in person and look at some of our most successful resale spares.
